In late 16th century Italy, dance became an art form and the first comprehensive dance manuals were produced. Though some dances in these manuals were for two or more couples, most were for a solo couple, with perfectly symmetrical floor patterns. Though the choreographies were often complex, the simple human imperatives behind the art was fully appreciated. Under Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth, established in 1649, dancing was frowned upon as self-indulgent, sexually provocative, and a punishable offense as well. Later, however, dance was readily accepted, allowing it to flourish.

Every play, from Hamlet to Plaza Suite, is composed of two elements: a story and imitation or play-acting. In pantomimes and farces, the play-acting element is obviously more important. It is evident that in the ideal play the good story will be combined with the opportunity for good pantomime. In its essentials, therefore, the art of drama is simply telling a story by means of imitation.
